What is really behind the France protests and riots of 2026? From a student blockade at a Créteil high school gate to the night Limoges town hall burned, we test every popular theory (immigration and "civil war", a far-left plot, Iranian disinformation, a new May '68, "France is the next Greece") and show where each one leads: France's money. The short answer: France is not poor and not about to default, but it has run a budget deficit every year since 1974. The state spends about 57% of everything the economy produces, yet absent teachers go unreplaced while pensions cost about two and a half times all of education. Now interest rates are up: in the State's own 2027 budget, interest on the debt costs more than running the schools, and France pays more to borrow than Italy. The 2027 budget meant to calm lenders is exactly what people march against, a Zucman wealth tax closes only a small part of the gap, and the April 2027 election could turn the squeeze into a Liz Truss-style bond market crisis. Nobody official has identified who set the Limoges or school fires; arrest figures are from the French Justice and Interior Ministries. "The State's own budget" means central government only (interest ~€72bn vs ~€64bn for schools, excluding teachers' pensions).
