About 14,000 years ago, near the river Rhine, a puppy caught what was probably canine distemper. It was too young to hunt and too sick to guard anything — and someone nursed it through weeks of illness anyway. Its teeth still carry the record.
When did humans start keeping pets? Long before farming, long before writing — and the story runs from Ice Age wolves to a pharaoh's guard dog, a Roman lapdog with her own poem, and the muscles in your dog's eyebrows.
In this animated documentary:
• How a puppy's tooth enamel shows it survived three bouts of disease — with human help
• The leftover-meat idea for how wolves became dogs, and the famous (and debated) Soviet fox experiment
• A 12,000-year-old burial with a hand resting on a puppy, and a 9,500-year-old cat burial on Cyprus
• Abuwtiyuw, the royal Egyptian guard dog who got a coffin, linen and perfume from the king
• Why most cat mummies were not pets, and whether Egyptians really worshipped cats
• Puppy-dog eyes, the oxytocin gaze loop, and why dogs follow your pointing finger

📚 Educational & historical note: This video is for education and entertainment and simplifies complex history. Contested points are flagged on screen: when and where dogs were domesticated is still argued over, the leftover-meat idea is a hypothesis, the fox experiment began with fur-farm foxes, and ancient anecdotes (Diodorus, Suetonius) are attributed to their authors. Grave plans and cross-sections are schematic.
