Temporal bone encephaloceles occur when brain tissue and its surrounding coverings protrude through a defect in the bone separating the brain from the middle ear or mastoid. These defects can allow cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to leak into the ear and may cause persistent middle-ear fluid, hearing loss, clear ear drainage, or recurrent infections. In some cases, an unrecognized CSF leak can create a pathway for serious infections such as meningitis.
