Their Honeymoon Boat Was Found Floating — They Weren't In It | Glen and Bessie Hyde | Grand Canyon 1928
On October 20th 1928, newlyweds Glen and Bessie Hyde launched a homemade wooden boat into the Colorado River at Green River, Utah. Their goal: run the entire Grand Canyon — 277 miles of some of the most dangerous whitewater in North America. No life preservers. No safety gear. If they made it, Bessie would be the first documented woman to complete the journey. They were eight days from the finish line when they vanished.
On December 19th 1928, a search aircraft spotted their boat floating near river mile 237. When rescuers reached it — everything was still there. Bessie's diary. Glen's camera. Their food. Their coats. A gun. The shore near the boat was undisturbed. The only things missing were Glen and Bessie Hyde. They have never been found. Nearly 100 years later — nobody knows what happened.
This is the full documented story — the Kolb warning, Bessie's haunting last words, the Georgie Clark connection, and the question the boat has never answered.
