A comprehensive odyssey through the details and nuances of calibrating the TEAC 80-8 In this episode, we walk through a full calibration of a Teac 80-8 ½-inch 8-track analog tape machine, start to finish, showing what it actually takes to get one of these classics dialed in correctly. We cover the real-world calibration process you’d perform in a studio: electronics-to-electronics (E-to-E) calibration, playback alignment, record level setup, bias and erase bias adjustment, meter accuracy, and verification using both a scope and a DMM. Along the way, we explain what each adjustment does, why it matters, and what can go wrong if it’s even slightly off. We’re using an MRL alignment tape rated at 355 nWb/m, while intentionally setting this machine up for a 320 nWb/m operating level. That means we also dig into how that offset works electrically, what it looks like at the test points, and how to compensate properly so 0 VU actually means something on this machine. This episode is about process, patience, and repeatability. The Teac 80-8 doesn’t reward shortcuts — but when it’s aligned correctly, it absolutely delivers. If you’re restoring, maintaining, or trying to better understand analog tape machines, this session shows what calibration really looks like in practice. If you’ve ever chased bias, fought playback alignment, or questioned your meter readings, you’re not alone — drop your experiences or questions in the comments. 00:00:00 - Start 00:02:12 - Preamble 00:06:06 - Calibrate: E to E (input/output) & VU 00:07:30 - Calibrate: "OVERLOAD" indicator 00:18:19 - Tech Tip: Low impedance cable for o'scope display 00:19:33 - Calibrate: PLAYBACK & EQ (repro & sync) 355nW/m to 320nW/m 00:23:24 - Discover: R/P-5, loose pot on R/P board 00:34:07 - RECORD BIAS - "by the book"..? 00:40:53 - Set: BIAS levels for 320nW/m tape stock 00:56:47 - Set: RECORD levels & RECORD EQ 01:11:07 - Confirm: ERASE efficacy 01:14:28 - Summation #teac #analogrecording #tapemachine #retro #electronicsrepair #reeltoreel #multitrack #analog #vintageaudio #studio #analoggear #audio #audioengineering #recordingstudios
