Three chapters today that move from a buried belt in the ground to the deepest personal lament Yiramiyahu has spoken yet. Chapter 13 opens with an object lesson. YAHUAH tells Yiramiyahu to buy a linen belt, wear it, then go bury it in the rocks by the Parats River without putting it in water. After many days He tells him to go dig it up. The belt is ruined. Good for nothing. And YAHUAH says: this is how I will ruin the pride of Yahudah and the great pride of Yirushalam. Just as a belt clings to the waist of a man, so I caused the whole house of Yisharal and the whole house of Yahudah to cling to Me, but they would not listen. Then the wine jars. Every jar shall be filled with wine. And when the people say they already know that, YAHUAH says: I will fill all the inhabitants of this land with drunkenness, and they shall dash against one another. Then the warning that carries the whole chapter. Can the leopard change its spots? Then also you who are accustomed to doing evil can do good. Chapter 14 is the drought. The land is cracked. The cisterns are empty. The farmers are ashamed. The deer abandon their newborn fawns because there is no grass. Yiramiyahu intercedes for the people. And YAHUAH stops him. Do not pray for the welfare of this people. When they fast I will not hear their cry. When they offer burnt offerings I will not accept them. I will consume them by sword, famine, and disease. Then Yiramiyahu pushes back. The false prophets are telling the people there will be peace. YAHUAH says: I did not send them. They are prophesying lies in My name. Chapter 15 is where the third lament arrives. And it is the most personal yet. YAHUAH says even if Mosheh and Shamual stood before Him He would not relent toward this people. Send them out of My sight. Let them go. And then Yiramiyahu breaks open. Woe to me, my mother, that you bore me. A man of strife and contention to the whole land. I have not lent nor have I borrowed, yet everyone curses me. Then the deepest line: why is my pain unceasing? Why is my wound incurable, refusing to be healed? Will you be to me like a deceptive brook, like waters that fail? YAHUAH answers. If you return I will restore you. If you utter what is precious and not what is worthless you shall be as My mouth. I will make you a fortified wall of bronze. They will fight against you but they shall not prevail. I am with you to save you and deliver you. The lament does not end in resolution.
