In Part 2 of the Fjordmen series, we speak with representatives from Norway's environmental authorities and leading researchers to better understand the growing sea trout crisis. After many attempts, we also manage to secure an interview with an advisor representing Norway's salmon farming industry, offering a chance to hear both sides of the story.
BACKGROUND: Ten years ago, after alarming reports of massive sea lice infestations on sea trout in several of Norway's western fjords, Lars Lenth and I decided to investigate the issue for ourselves - a journey that resulted in the documentary series "Fjordmenn", originally released on VGTV.
Since then, Norway's production of farmed Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout has increased dramatically—from around 1.3 million tonnes in 2016 to more than 1.85 million tonnes by 2025/2026. During the same period, the seafood and aquaculture industry has more than doubled in value. Yet the vast majority of fish are still raised in open-net pens, producing enormous numbers of sea lice.
