Mike Viola - lead singer of "the Fastest Rising Single In the History of the Playtone Label"

Little did Mike Viola know when the late Adam Schlesinger talked him into doing the vocals for a demo that was going to be submitted to Tom Hanks for a movie just how much his life would change. That demo recording of "That Thing You Do" by Mike, Adam, and Andy Chase (using the band name Scientist Alexis) was chosen out of hundreds of entries to be the song that the movie of the same name would be centered around. Released 30 years ago this month, the film perfectly captures the story of a band inspired by the Beatles in 1964 that (almost) realizes their dream of being the Next Big Thing. Mike and Jim Monaghan talk about what went into making the song, some behind-the-scenes stories about the recording, as well as Mike's new album "Chum" which comes out at the end of October.
