The Sailor Dance “Yablochko” originates from a traditional Russian folk song that gained popularity during the revolutionary era, when it was widely performed by sailors on the streets and in taverns. Known for its lively rhythm and humorous verses, it became a symbol of boldness, spirit, and camaraderie of maritime life. The dance first appeared on stage in 1927 in the ballet The Red Poppy at the Bolshoi Theatre, where it achieved great success and evolved into a recognized stage piece.
Today, “Yablochko” is considered a classic of folk-character dance, typically performed as an energetic group number featuring increasing tempo, solo variations, virtuosic tricks, and elements of acrobatics.
