Stringed Instruments – Resonate to the Future! “Sanbasō” are celebratory dances performed at the start of a kabuki season, and are taken from the “Okina” Noh dance. Said to be the oldest among the Nagauta “Sanbasō” pieces, “Hinazuru Sanbasō” was supposedly written in 1775, however some place the song from as far back as 1673. The piece is composed to two parts: first the “okinasenzai,” and then the “sanbasō”. The Okinasenzai is a prayer for peace and tranquility. The “Sanbasō” portion is a prayer dance for a bountiful harvest. Hanayanagi Bishojiro, a traditional Japanese dancer who won the second prize, first division at the "74th National Dance Competition" sponsored by the Tokyo Shimbun in 2017, also recently passed the Kineie Natori exam in 2019. Bishojiro is a young dancer and performer we are looking forward to seeing more in the future. We perform this piece today in hopes that the Corona virus pandemix will end as soon as possible.
