Hello and welcome back to Easy Literary Lessons!
In this video, I have provided a detailed and easy explanation of Sonnet 18 by William Shakespeare, popularly known by its opening line “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”
Sonnet 18 is one of Shakespeare’s most celebrated sonnets. In the poem, the speaker compares the beauty of the beloved with the beauty of a summer’s day. However, he concludes that the beloved is more lovely and more constant than summer, because summer is temporary and its beauty eventually fades.
The poem develops the important idea that although physical beauty and human life are temporary, poetry has the power to preserve beauty through time. Through his verse, Shakespeare believes that the beauty of the beloved will remain alive for future generations.
This lecture is especially useful for students preparing for UGC NET, SET, TGT, PGT, BA, MA English, and other English Literature examinations.

💡 Message of the Poem
The central message of Sonnet 18 is that natural and physical beauty cannot escape the effects of time. Summer passes, seasons change, and human beauty eventually fades. However, Shakespeare presents poetry as a means of defeating time. As long as people continue to read the poem, the beauty celebrated in it will continue to live.
