About GILLES PETERSON, a cult radio Dj: few DJs have connected as many musical worlds as Gilles Peterson. Born in Caen, France and raised in South London, he grew up surrounded by the suburban soul scene of the early 1980s, listening to artists like Level 42, Earth, Wind & Fire and Central Line while tuning into deeper pirate radio stations such as Radio Invicta. That early obsession quickly turned into action. As a teenager, Peterson built his own makeshift radio transmitter — literally stretching an aerial between a tree and a phone box — broadcasting an eclectic mix of jazz, funk, reggae, soul and early electro. Not long after, he began appearing on London pirate stations including Radio Invicta, K-Jazz, Solar Radio and Horizon, helping shape a new generation of listeners hungry for rare grooves and underground sounds. At the same time, his reputation grew in the London club scene. From Camden’s Electric Ballroom to influential nights like Special Branch, Peterson developed a DJ style that freely blended jazz, funk, Latin music, soul and dance records. His sets attracted a loyal following and helped shape the emerging acid jazz movement — a term that famously started as a joke during one of his club sessions but soon became the name of an entire scene. In 1985 he released the influential Jazz Juice compilation series, collecting many of the records he had been championing in clubs. Soon after, EMI invited him to curate collections from the legendary Blue Note catalogue, introducing a new generation to classic jazz artists such as Art Blakey, Horace Parlan and Duke Pearson. Peterson’s broadcasting career soon moved into legal radio. After hosting the show Mad on Jazz*on BBC Radio London, he went on to present shows on Jazz FM before joining the newly legalised Kiss FM in the early 1990s. There he launched the Worldwide show — a programme dedicated to musical discovery that quickly became one of the station’s most popular broadcasts. In 1998 he brought Gilles Peterson Worldwide to BBC Radio 1, where the show became one of the most respected specialist music programmes on the station. Known for its open-minded philosophy, Peterson’s approach was simple: “join the dots” between artists, producers and genres, placing equal importance on a Max Roach jazz album and an underground dance 12-inch. Over time the show grew into a global platform, eventually broadcast in more than fifteen countries — from New Zealand and Croatia to Nigeria, Cyprus and the United States. The programme has also featured exclusive live sessions and special concerts recorded specifically for the broadcast, giving artists a unique space to perform and experiment. Beyond radio, Peterson has also played a major role as a label founder and curator. He launched the Acid Jazz label in the late 1980s before creating Talkin’ Loud Records, which helped introduce artists such as Jamiroquai, Galliano and The Brand New Heavies. The label earned multiple Mercury Prize nominations, including a win in 1997 for Roni Size Reprazent’s *New Forms*. Today he continues that mission through Brownswood Recordings, supporting new artists and releasing influential compilations. He is also the creator of international events such as the Worldwide Festival in Sète and the We Out Here festival in the UK — gatherings that celebrate DJs, live music and global sounds. More than four decades into his career, Gilles Peterson remains a tireless musical explorer — a DJ, broadcaster and record collector dedicated to discovering new sounds and connecting audiences around the world. --- Songs: tape includes the following songs plus many others: Abstrutions (Max Roach) Bird Song (Underwolves) Gorilla with a Gun (The Bell Cafe Band) Hard Margin (The Creators) Higher (Q-Tip) Life Changes (Ski Oakenfull, Rose Smith) Marrakech (Spacek Remix) (Incognito) Off License (Tek 9) See the Sun (Les Gammas) Someday [Piano & Strings Version Instrumental] (Silent Poets) Spanish Joint (D'Angelo) The Grunt (Part 1) [Single Version] (The J.B.'s) The Hurricane (Christopher Young) Totally Together (Jackie Mittoo) Vuelvo al Sur (Astor Piazzolla / Mercedes Sosa) -- Keywords -- #nujazz #JazzFunk #Afrobeat #BrokenBeat
