China's $3 Glasses Are Destroying a $165 Billion Monopoly — Here's Why A pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers costs $5 to $8 to manufacture. It sells for $249. This is the story of how one Italian company came to own the frame, the lens, the store, and even the insurance plan that pays your claim — and how a Chinese manufacturing city most people have never heard of is quietly taking that monopoly apart, one $3 lens at a time. Leonardo Del Vecchio grew up in a Milan orphanage and became a tool-and-die apprentice at 14. By 26 he was making eyewear parts. By the 2000s, his company Luxottica had swallowed Ray-Ban, Oakley, LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, and a licensing list that includes Prada, Chanel, Versace, and Armani. In 2018 it merged with Essilor, the world's largest lens maker, to form EssilorLuxottica — a company that now controls manufacturing, retail, and vision insurance under one roof. Meanwhile, in Danyang, Jiangsu Province, more than 1,600 companies produce over 400 million spectacle lenses a year — roughly half the world's total supply. What started as hand-ground glass in the 1960s has grown into a cluster running semiconductor-style lithography equipment, matching branded optical quality at a fraction of the price.
