Day 2: Phakding (2630m) to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
Today's trail took us across the Dudh Koshi River and gently climbed through the valley to Toktak (2,760m) and Benkar (2,710m). The path hugged the river, lined with beautiful blue pine and rhododendron forests — though it was November, so the famous spring blooms weren't around, the evergreen pines still gave the landscape a rich, deep green contrast against the dusty trail. Along the way, we passed cascading waterfalls and were treated to crisp views of the snow-capped peaks of Thamserku (6,623m) and Khumbi La (5,765m) at Benkar — the November air made them stand out even more sharply.
We crossed the Dudh Koshi River at Benkar, and from there, a short walk brought us to Monjo (2,840m). Just beyond the village, the trek entered Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park, where we had our permits checked. After that, the trail dropped down a steep rocky descent to a large farm, crossed another bridge over the Dudh Koshi, and followed the west bank. A short distance upstream, we reached Jorsale (2,830m).
The trail continued along the river for a while, then recrossed the Dudh Koshi. After a series of short ups and downs, we made a steep climb near the confluence of the Bhote Koshi and Dudh Koshi rivers. Another bridge crossing later, the trail began its steep ascent toward Namche Bazaar (3,440m).
Namche is the main trading village in the Khumbu region, famous for its busy Saturday market — a meeting point for Hindu traders from the lowlands and Tibetan yak caravans crossing the glaciated Nangpa La pass. Even in November, the village had its usual buzz.
We stayed overnight at Mount Kailash Lodge. After settling in, I went out to explore Namche Bazaar — though every step came with heavy breathing, a clear sign my body was adjusting to the altitude. I washed my clothes at a community tap and even managed to brave a freezing cold shower. Surprisingly, it was refreshing! I then headed back to the lodge and rested for the day.
Note to self: Avoid alcohol — it won't help with the next day's trek!
