Fable comes out on February 23rd, 2027. The studio that made the first three has been closed since 2016.
Microsoft bought Lionhead Studios in 2006. In 2012, Lionhead pitched a fourth Fable, and it was turned down; according to three people familiar with those talks, a single-player Fable would not be allowed. Four years later, Fable Legends was cancelled before it ever left closed beta, and Lionhead closed its doors. In 2027, Fable ships again: single-player, and on PlayStation 5. This is the record of how a studio was bought, and why only its name survived.
Endgame Files documents collapse in the games industry — studio deaths, development hell, cancelled games, and the decisions that changed how games get made.
