In 1948, a McDonald's hamburger cost fifteen cents. By 2024, the company's own numbers showed its menu had gotten about 40% more expensive in five years, almost twice as fast as inflation. Low-income customers walked away first, visits fell, and in September 2026 the CEO told investors: "We need to stop talking about that being a difficult environment, and just say that is the environment." Yet McDonald's still made $8.56 billion in profit in 2025.
This business documentary examines how the cheapest restaurant in America stopped being cheap. From the McDonald brothers' walk-up window and Ray Kroc's real estate machine to the Dollar Menu, the $18 Big Mac meal, the $5 Meal Deal, the E. coli outbreak, an AI pricing engine that recommends an "optimal price" for every restaurant, and the 2026 investor day, this is a story about a company that taught America it could always afford McDonald's, and then changed the deal.
Red Arrow Club breaks down the business strategies, financial incentives, and corporate decisions behind some of the world's most recognizable brands.
