Crush was written about a guy who liked to play a little cat and mouse with me, and honestly that was more than enough inspiration haha. Generally speaking, I will write a song about just about anything or anyone if the story gives me something to work with. That’s one of my favorite parts about songwriting. I can take a weird look, a flirty moment, an awkward situation, a bad decision, a memory, or somebody who keeps playing games with me and somehow turn it into a whole song. And with Crush, I definitely did not want to hold back. This one is playful, flirty, a little ridiculous, a little inappropriate, and very much me having fun with the situation instead of taking it too seriously. There’s flirting, innuendos, bad decisions, and questionable plumbing too haha. But underneath all this chaos, it really is just about that feeling of having a crush on somebody who knows damn well what they’re doing. The teasing, wondering if they’re actually interested or just enjoying watching you squirm a little. I think part of being a good storyteller is being willing to put the whole moment into the song instead of cleaning it up until it doesn’t feel real anymore. Sometimes my songs are emotional.
