Yesterday, we officially launched our Rainwater Harvesting and Groundwater Recharge Campaign in Fazal Town, Rawalpindi, with a mission to address the growing groundwater crisis and help revive dry borewells through rainwater harvesting.
Through the earnings of our YouTube channel, Teacher Usman – SAB KAY LIYE, we are taking responsibility for reviving 25 dry borewells in the area. Alongside our efforts, an NGO will contribute by developing three large rainwater harvesting pits and helping revive three additional dry borewells at a local mosque.
One of our key initiatives is to collect and recharge the water used for ablution (Wudu) at the mosque instead of allowing this valuable water to go to waste. Every drop matters!
A Community Facing a Serious Water Crisis
During our visit, we also witnessed another major urban challenge: illegal encroachments and blocked streets. Residents have constructed stairs, ramps and other structures that have occupied public spaces, leaving extremely narrow passages and almost no room for pedestrians.
The situation is particularly alarming because the area received approximately 1,000 mm of rainfall during the recent monsoon season, yet most of this precious rainwater was simply drained away.
Think about it: thousands of litres of rainwater flowing through our streets and drains, while underground water reserves continue to decline and borewells remain dry.
Why Must We Recharge Dry Borewells?
Rainwater harvesting is not just an environmental activity; it is becoming a necessity for our survival.
If we continue allowing rainwater to flow into drainage systems without replenishing underground aquifers, the groundwater crisis will become even more severe.
We must:
Recharge existing dry borewells through scientifically designed rainwater harvesting systems.
Collect and reuse mosque ablution water wherever technically and environmentally suitable.
Construct rainwater harvesting pits in residential communities.
Protect public spaces and prevent illegal encroachments.
Educate people about groundwater conservation.
Turn every possible rainfall event into an opportunity to replenish our underground water reserves.
Taking the Message to Mosques and Communities
We also used the opportunity of the Friday sermon (Jummah Khutbah) at the local mosque to communicate the importance of groundwater recharge and educate the community.
Our message is simple: Rainwater is not waste. It is a precious resource that must return to the earth.
Through SAB KAY LIYE, we want to take this awareness to every neighbourhood, mosque, school and community across Pakistan.
Our YouTube earnings are being invested in practical environmental projects. We believe that social media should not only entertain people; it should also create real change on the ground.
Let’s recharge our groundwater before it is too late.
Watch, share and become part of this movement.
