Radio Veronica was a Dutch "pirate" radio station with transmitters from a a ship that operated in international waters off the Dutch coast and was on air for over fourteen years. It was the closest thing to American AM/FM radio, providing a popular alternative to Dutch state-run radio, which refused to play popular music such as rock and soul during the sixties and early 1970s. After the signing of an international treaty in the 1970s the station was forced off the airways on 31 August 1974 and prompted one of the largest protest demonstrations ever in the Dutch capital of The Hague in 1973. A popular Dutch artist at the the time wrote a song about the impending disappearance of Radio Veronica in 1974. This video includes the final Top 40 broadcast on the final day of the ship's transmission. After being forced off the airways owing to an international anti-pirate radio station agreement in the early 1970's, Veronica ironically went on to become the most successful terrestrial television and radio broadcasting organization operating in the Netherlands today.
