What Really Happens After You Return Something to Amazon

Amazon refunded a woman for an incomplete desk and told her to keep it. So what really happens after you return something to Amazon - and who pays for it? In this documentary, we follow a return from your doorstep to inspection, open-box resale, liquidation pallets, and, sometimes, a waste facility. We look at why returnless refunds exist, why a seller installed about 40 cameras to prove what came back, and what a 2020 CBC tracker investigation found. The numbers are huge: the National Retail Federation estimated about $850 billion of US returns in 2025 (16% of sales, 19% of online sales). Amazon's own account of where returns go is not an independent count, so we separate what Amazon says from what reporters and sellers found. If you have ever tapped "return" and wondered where the box went, this is for you. Subscribe to The Business You Don't See for more hidden economics behind familiar companies.
