Visitamos o Donegal County Museum, em Letterkenny, e descobrimos que este museu guarda histórias muito mais surpreendentes do que imaginávamos sobre Donegal e a Irlanda. O próprio prédio onde hoje funciona o museu já faz parte da história: ele foi construído na década de 1840 como parte do antigo Letterkenny Workhouse e abriu suas portas justamente no início da Grande Fome da Irlanda. The building itself is already part of the story. Built in the 1840s as part of the former Letterkenny Workhouse, it opened its doors just as the Great Famine was beginning in Ireland. In this video, we learned more about this devastating period in Irish history. We also discovered the story of the Hiring Fairs, where poor people, including children, were hired to work for months at a time, often because their families could not afford to support them. We also visited the temporary exhibition about Rockwell Kent, an American artist who spent a summer in 1926 in the Glenlough area, here in our county of Donegal, and found inspiration in its landscape and people. We also discovered that his story has an unexpected connection with Brazil and the Brazilian artist Cândido Portinari.
