Stuw Driel

The weir at Driel is an impressive hydraulic engineering structure on the Lower Rhine. With its distinctive, large semi-circular steel gates (visor gates), this weir regulates the water level of the Lower Rhine and the IJssel, ensuring that the rivers remain navigable and that the supply of fresh water to the IJsselmeer is maintained. Together with the adjacent lock and the sleek Gelderland river landscape, it forms a sleek, iconic sight from the banks and from the air. De stuw bij Driel is een indrukwekkend waterbouwkundig kunstwerk in de Nederrijn. Met zijn karakteristieke, grote halfronde stalen schuiven (vizierschuiven) regelt deze stuw het waterpeil van de Nederrijn en de IJssel, waardoor de rivieren bevaarbaar blijven en het zoetwateraanbod richting het IJsselmeer op peil blijft. Het vormt samen met de naastgelegen sluis en het strakke Gelderse rivierenlandschap een strak, iconisch beeld vanaf de oevers en vanuit de lucht.
