Duntulm Castle sits on Skye's Trotternish Peninsula, overlooking the sea toward the Outer Hebrides. Originally an Iron Age broch known as "Dun Dhaibhidh," it was repaired in the early 16th century by Donald Gorm and became a stronghold of the MacDonalds — James V is even said to have been impressed by the castle on a visit to Skye in 1540. The MacDonalds held it until around 1730, when they abandoned it for a more comfortable home nearby. Local legend holds the ruin is haunted — long said to be the real reason it was left behind.
