RUN STATS: Run Name: Eagle Bowl Location: Kirkwood Rating: ♦ (Single Black) My Personal Rating Opinion: ♦-♦♦ (Somewhere between a single and double black) Lift Taken: The Wall (Chair 10) Maximum Pitch: 28 degrees Run Type: Technical Bowl Total Run Length: 1.5 mi. Total Vertical Drop: 1,637 feet. Run Aspect: Northeast SNOW CONDITIONS: Chowder/Chunder (Chopped up powder) DATE OF RECORDING: January 4, 2023 DESCRIPTION: Eagle Bowl is an epic technical bowl area located off The Wall at Kirkwood. To get here take Chair 10 (Wagon Wheel/The Wall) to the very top of Kirkwood. Drop into The Wall either from the Upper Entrance (   • Top of The Wall - Kirkwood  ) or the regular entrance shown in this video. Regardless of which entrance you take, you'll have to head hard skiers' right to make it to Eagle Bowl. The entrance to Eagle Bowl is essentially the right shoulder/ridge of the bowl. It can be a little unobvious that there's a run down this right ridge initially. Once you look at a trail map & get to know the area a bit better, it's pretty easy to find Eagle Bowl. Eagle Bowl is marked as a single black diamond, however, conditions can vary drastically depending on seasonal snow totals which may affect the run's difficulty. On high snow years, a lot of the rocks and obstacles will be covered, making the run much more bowl-like, and easier. On lower snow years, a lot more rocks and obstacles will be visible which makes the run a lot more challenging/interesting. The 2024 ski season for the Tahoe region was a very low snow and as such, Eagle Bowl was a lot more difficult than in previous seasons. There were a lot more opportunities for cliff drops and straightlines which made the run as a whole a lot of fun to ski! The bowl initially started off mellow but filtered into some really cool rocky outcroppings and chutes. We did this run about 3-4x this day and each time the bowl felt like a "choose-your-own-adventure" game and no attempt felt the same as the previous one. The only downside is the traverse back to the Frontside of Kirkwood which can be a bit annoying. You have the option of taking the bowl all the way down to Devil's Corral (a flat run-out for a bunch of the runs in the Thunder Saddle Zone). However, on the day of recording this was not an option as there were several creeks that were still uncovered in the Devil's Corral area. Because of this, we started our traverse well above this run-out until we made it back to the top of the Snowkirk lift (Chair 1). I really had a blast skiing Eagle Bowl! In all my years of skiing Kirkwood, I never really made it over here. This was entirely because I wanted to wait for a bluebird powder day to showcase and ski this run in its full glory. Because of its Eastern exposure, I've heard this run can be a crusty pain on days when conditions aren't as good. So even though it took me a while to ski and post a video to Youtube, I'm very happy I waited. Because of the long exit traverse and since Kirkwood has a bunch of other really cool terrain, I'm not sure if this is a zone I'll check out every time I head to Kirkwood, but I will definitely be skiing it a lot more often in the future!
