It was only waiting for the volume to come back up. “Shadow Returns” opens THE FINAL TRANSMISSION like something forcing its way back into the room. There is no careful reintroduction, no attempt to explain where Broken Shaman has been and absolutely no interest in making the return comfortable. The track immediately establishes the physical language of Album XV: poisoned hip-hop, industrial pressure, hostile low end, ritual percussion and electronics that feel damaged rather than programmed. Psychedelic guitar cuts through the machinery while fragments of Eastern tonality give the production an almost ceremonial menace. But the real threat is the voice. Broken Shaman doesn't arrive polished or reconstructed. He sounds raw, crooked and dangerously present — as though everything accumulated across fourteen albums has been compressed into something heavier, less predictable and considerably harder to contain. “Shadow Returns” isn't nostalgia for an earlier version of Broken Shaman.
