A BEGGAR’S PRAYER (Mindy’s Song) Traditional Korean Arrangement I wrote “A Beggar’s Prayer” on November 15, 2008, after learning that my cousin, Malinda “Mindy” Bastian Wadley, had passed away from cancer at age 55. Mindy was one of my older cousins, and I have fond memories of spending time with her in Seattle when I was young. Her passing caused me to reflect on life, faith, and what ultimately matters. That day, a melody came into my mind. I’m not a trained composer, but I played the trumpet, so I picked it up and began playing what I was hearing. I added lyrics, wrote out the melody, and later worked with a friend who helped add chords and accompaniment. Over the years, the hymn was occasionally performed at my church. My friend Kay Hancock, an exceptional organist, sometimes played it as prelude or postlude music. She even encouraged me to submit it for a new hymnbook, although I never did. Now, all these years later, I’m finally sharing the song and experimenting with how the same lyrics and composition sound in different musical styles. ABOUT THIS ARRANGEMENT This version presents “A Beggar’s Prayer” in a traditional Korean musical style, featuring a female vocalist and instrumentation inspired by Korea’s rich musical heritage. ABOUT THE SONG Although the hymn was inspired by Mindy’s passing, I don’t really think of it as a song about death. It’s a prayer about finding our way through life, placing our hope in Jesus Christ, and remembering to help others just as we ask God to help us.
