______ About the Game ______________________ California Games is the ultimate 80s multi-event sports simulator, capturing the "rad" culture of the West Coast through six distinct events: Footbag, Halfpipe, Surfing, Roller Skating, BMX, and Flying Disk. Visually, the game is a treat—graphically, it stands up very well for its era. A particularly impressive feat is the innovative work they did with CGA graphics; they managed to make the limited palette look surprisingly vibrant and detailed. The general control scheme is very solid, and the events offer a decent level of complexity once you dig into them. With its various (though simple) game modes, this title is clearly designed for social play; it must be incredibly fun when played with friends in a "hotseat" competition. However, the game isn't without its wipeouts. One major drawback is the lack of a CPU opponent; you can't play against the machine, and it really feels like they should have "invented" some high scores or AI marks to beat when playing solo. The gameplay also suffers from some technical quirks: Perspective Confusion: Some events, especially Roller Skating and BMX, are confusing due to how they are rendered. They don't quite respect the pseudo-3D perspective, making hitboxes feel off and obstacles hard to judge. Lack of Precision: While the controls are good in theory, certain joystick movements are very imprecise, which is frustrating because the game requires very specific timing to succeed. Poor Documentation: The manual doesn't explain the events well enough; there is a lot of missing information regarding the mechanics of each sport. Longevity: Because of the limited depth and lack of AI, it doesn't offer many hours of gameplay before it starts feeling repetitive. It's a classic for a reason, but it's definitely a game that shines brightest with a group of friends and a lot of patience for its tricky timing.
