The numbers are staggering: NPR 2,363 billion in remittances in FY 2082/83 (a 37% increase), 76% of households receiving remittance income, and poverty falling from 21.5% to 3% in twelve years. But Dr. Shrestha argues the picture is more fragile than it appears: 80 to 85% of remittance income goes to basic consumption, leaving almost nothing for productive investment.
