You touched it this morning without thinking. You will touch it again about eight times today. For almost all of human history, it did not exist. No soap, no shampoo, no detergent, and grease that plain water will never shift.
So how did ancient humans survive without soap? People have always wanted to be clean, and they had a whole toolkit for it. What they lacked was one molecule. This video explains why water cannot move grease, then follows sand and clay, wood ash and lye, foaming plants, and the Roman laundries that washed cloth in stale urine. It shows why Romans oiled themselves and scraped it off with a strigil, how soap was probably invented by accident in a fire pit, the Babylonian and Egyptian recipes, and why for about 3,000 years soap was used on wool and laundry but hardly ever on bodies. Then come Aleppo's hard bar soap, the centuries when Europe stopped bathing, Britain's 140-year soap tax, and Ignaz Semmelweis, the doctor who cut deaths in a Vienna maternity ward by around 90 percent with a basin, and was ignored. Finally, how a soap molecule really works, how it tears viruses apart, and how many lives it still saves.
In this video, we discuss:
▸ Why water alone cannot remove grease
▸ Sand, clay, ash, plants and Roman urine laundries
▸ Oil, strigils and steam houses
▸ The accidental invention of soap and the oldest recipes
▸ Aleppo soap, Europe's fear of bathing and the soap tax
▸ Semmelweis and the handwashing nobody believed in
▸ How soap works, and what it does to viruses
A substance made from fat and ash, by accident, at a cooking fire, is still one of the cheapest and most effective medical technologies ever invented.
