Linear FEA is fast and powerful—but it is not sufficient when materials yield, deformations become large, structures buckle, or contact conditions change during loading. In Section 10 of the FEA Done Right Series, we introduce nonlinear finite element analysis and examine the three primary sources of nonlinearity: material behavior, changing geometry, and contact. We also discuss practical strategies for improving convergence and take a closer look at contact modeling in ANSYS Workbench. In this video, you will learn: How nonlinear FEA differs from the linear equation Ka = F Why nonlinear analysis uses load increments and iterative equilibrium checks How the Newton–Raphson method updates the tangent stiffness and corrects the solution When yielding, plasticity, hyperelasticity, creep, and other material behaviors create nonlinearity When large deformation, stress stiffening, and buckling require geometric nonlinearity How changing contact conditions create boundary nonlinearity Why multiple nonlinearities often occur together Practical ways to improve nonlinear-solution reliability and convergence The five common ANSYS contact types: bonded, no separation, frictionless, rough, and frictional How to select contact and target sides Why automatic contact detection must always be checked How initial gaps, penetration, pinball regions, and surface treatment affect contact behavior How to use the Contact Tool in ANSYS Workbench before solving Learning resources mentioned in the video ▶ ANSYS Innovation Space: https://innovation.ansys.com/ Recommended ANSYS courses: Structural Boundary Conditions: https://innovationspace.ansys.com/pro...
