Sanae Takaichi's First UN Speech: Calls For Removal of Japan’s Wartime ‘ENEMY STATE’ Label | N18G

Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly on Japan's 70th anniversary of membership, Prime Minister of Japan Sanae Takaichi addressed critical global security, supply chain, and multilateral governance challenges. Takaichi stated that the international order based on the rule of law faces severe challenges from power balance shifts and heightened geopolitical competition. She highlighted maritime disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, calling for unimpeded international navigation, and detailed Japan's updated Free and Open Indo-Pacific initiatives alongside the RISE Partnership for resilient critical mineral supply chains. Takaichi reaffirmed Japan's dedication to nuclear disarmament under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty framework, drawing on the country's atomic bombing history. She raised serious concerns regarding North Korea's advancing nuclear and missile programmes, malicious cyber activities including cryptocurrency theft, and illicit military cooperation with Russia, asserting that the security of the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic regions is inseparable. She called for the complete denuclearisation of North Korea and the immediate resolution of the abductions issue, expressing readiness for bilateral dialogue under the Japan-DPRK Pyongyang Declaration. Addressing the war in Ukraine, Takaichi criticised a permanent Security Council member for initiating aggression and vetoing resolutions. 'In this current situation, it must be said that the Security Council is not functioning for international peace,' said Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, while demanding urgent structural reforms to expand both permanent and non-permanent seats to reflect modern realities. She also demanded the formal deletion of the 'enemy states' clauses from the UN Charter in alignment with the 2005 General Assembly resolution. Takaichi outlined Japan's contributions of over 670 billion dollars in Official Development Assistance and its leadership in international disaster risk reduction, Universal Health Coverage, green transformation strategies toward net-zero by 2050, and the Hiroshima AI Process.
