Leonard Bernstein (1918–1990) Sonata for Clarinet and Piano Claire Eichhorn, clarinet Anna Balakerskaia, piano Recorded live at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., on April 21, 1996, as part of the 53rd American Music Festival. Bernstein composed his Sonata for Clarinet and Piano in 1941–42, while still in his early twenties. One of his earliest published works, the Sonata already displays many of the rhythmic, lyrical, and jazz-influenced characteristics that would become hallmarks of his musical language. Movements: I. Grazioso II. Andantino – Vivace e leggiero This performance took place on a particularly fitting date: April 21, 1996, exactly 54 years after the work received its premiere on April 21, 1942.
