The demand for land in our cities limits space where our children can play. Without playgrounds and the right play-leaders to staff them, city children could become a persecuted minority. Where can they play?
Jeremy James visits a new housing block in Liverpool, which has no play area for children, and which is a mile from the nearest park. He speaks with the city planning officer about the situation, and to children who live in an older housing block, about what their dream play area would be like. Liverpool does have some excellent facilities for children, Jeremy speaks to play group leaders working at different sites in the city, to find out what types of play area appeal to children.
London has also been wrestling with many of the issues faced by Liverpool. The LLC is experimenting with "play parks" - areas in existing parkland that is reserved exclusively for children. Jeremy visits a play park in East London's Victoria Park. In Hackney, Jeremy visits a play centre that focuses on arts and crafts. Finally, he visits the Notting Hill Adventure playground - a volunteer-run group, located on a demolition site - where kids are encouraged to use tools to build their own play apparatus.
