In 1949, Ingrid Bergman, the star of Casablanca and the screen's Joan of Arc, flew to Italy to make a film with director Roberto Rossellini, who only weeks earlier had stayed in the guest house of her family's home in Benedict Canyon. She never came back to her husband, Petter Lindström, or to their ten-year-old daughter, Pia. Her son with Rossellini was born in Rome in February 1950, a week before her divorce came through, and a month later a United States senator called her "a powerful influence for evil" on the Senate floor.
