If you've been decluttering room by room and the house still isn't getting anywhere, it isn't you. It's the method.
Here is the way a hotel does it instead, one kind of thing at a time, sitting down at your kitchen table, with one number nobody ever told you to count.
MY BOOK: The Spotless Method, the whole system written down in the order I'd actually do it.
spotlessmethod.com
I spent forty years in hotel housekeeping, and for a good many of them my office was next to the linen room. A housekeeper cleans by the room, but a hotel is run by the thing. The linen room counts towels, not rooms, every night of the year, and every room is reset against that count instead of sorted. That is the whole idea of this video, brought home to your own cupboards. Please hear this part: nothing leaves your house today, and this is not minimalism. My own house is full and I like it. And every step in here is done seated at the kitchen table with both feet on the floor. No bending, no kneeling, no ladders, no chairs, nothing heavy. If it's heavy or high, somebody else carries it.
What's inside:
1. The scene: why room by room leaves you holding a gravy boat at four in the afternoon
2. The number: why a place is a suggestion and a number is a rule
3. Cups and mugs, and the cupboard door test
4. Towels, the second population, and the hotel rag rule
5. Water bottles and travel cups
6. Plastic containers, done with the lids
7. The easy starters, and the three places to stay away from
8. The box: taped, dated four months out, and never reopened
9. Who profits from room by room
Plus: the par, the hotel idea behind every number in this video, and the honest limits, because a number won't empty a basement or the room of someone you lost.
How many mugs did you count, out loud, and how many of you live in the house? Tell me in the comments. I'll go first: twenty three mugs, one woman. I read every one.
