After crossing into Argentina and spending a few days around Purmamarca and Tilcara, it was time to begin a much bigger road trip through northern Argentina.
I first travelled from Purmamarca to Salta, where I spent a couple of days exploring the city before saying goodbye to the two people I had been travelling with since the Atacama Desert.
The next morning I took an early bus north to Humahuaca, where I met up with another part of our original Atacama road-trip group together with two new travellers.
Our first stop was the incredible Serranía de Hornocal, better known as the 14 Color Mountain. At more than 4,000 metres above sea level, huge layers of red, yellow, brown and green rock stretch across the Andes.
From there we began heading south again.
The following day took us through a completely different side of northern Argentina: winding roads through green cloud forest, small villages, roadside empanadas and an unexpected stop in Alemanía, a tiny settlement built around an old railway station.
As the day came to an end, the landscape changed again.
Red and orange rock formations began appearing around us as we entered the Quebrada de las Conchas, following the road toward Cafayate as the sun disappeared behind the mountains.
This is Part 1 of my northern Argentina road trip.
Next episode: Cafayate, the Quebrada de las Conchas, strange rock formations, hiking and Argentine wine.
