It's estimated that endometriosis affects one in ten women in the UK and around 190 million globally. It's a painful condition caused by cells similar to those that line the womb grow where they shouldn't - outside of the womb. It often affects organs in the pelvic area but can be found in other parts of the body too.
Every time a woman has a period that tissue reacts in the same was as it would if it were inside the uterus. Its swells, sheds and bleeds, causing pain that can be chronic and excruciating. It can take years to diagnose with women often told their period paid in 'normal'.
Because hormones, especially oestrogen, play a significant role in trigger it's cyclical growth and susbequent shedding, it can be quite tricky to manage and when we hit perimenopause/menopause another layer of complexity enters the picture with womentryign to balance their menopause symptoms with their HRT/MHT.
