In 1988, the brilliant Isabel Toledo designed a dress so clever it was called the Packing Dress. May she rest in peace. ❤️ The concept? Two large circles of fabric sewn together to create a dress that packs flat and transforms into a wearable piece of art. One circle has openings for your head and arms, and the other has an opening for your legs. Simple geometry, extraordinary design! Naturally, I had to try making one. I’m recreating this wonderfully unconventional dress by hand, using silk fabric and a whole lot of stitching. But I’m making one important improvement: POCKETS! The original dress didn’t have them, so I’m adding two enormous circular pockets to the front. Because what’s the point of making your own clothes if you can’t add pockets? Come along as I experiment with the pattern, make a mock-up, shop for fabric in Mexico, cut bias strips, question my decisions, and spend many happy hours hand stitching.
