How Many Days in the Scottish Highlands? Not Five.

Everybody drives the north of Scotland in five days. Almost nobody should, and nobody tells you what that quietly costs you. Not a viewpoint. A whole region. An honest answer to how many days you need for a Scottish Highlands road trip, starting by binning the mileage. The loop from Inverness is 516 miles, but the miles and the hours are distributed differently. Big stretches of the west are single track where a realistic average is under 30 mph; the east is fast road. The west is about half the distance and most of the hours. The five-day fix isn't compression, it's deletion. Turn inland at Tongue, cross to Lairg, and let Caithness, the far corner and the east coast go: about 100 miles and a night saved. The recommendation: seven days, three on the west, one where you don't move the car.
