How America Built the World Trade Center With These 8 Machines

How do you lift thousands of tons of steel once the building you're building becomes taller than the crane doing the lifting? And how do you get a crane down off the roof of the tallest building on Earth, when no crane on the ground can reach up there to grab it? Those are the three problems this film is actually about. In 1968, eight machines arrived in New York from the other side of the planet to help solve the second one. Cranes. Built in Australia. Designed to work from inside a tower's structural core and climb as the building rose around them. The problem they were built to solve wasn't simply lifting steel 1,300 feet into the air - it was keeping a crane working at all once the building it was building had risen past it. Conventional American crane systems had no practical way to keep climbing with a building at this scale. So the engineers looked overseas, found a machine nobody in the United States had used at this scale, and built the entire construction plan around it.
