On the eastern shore of Lake Batur lies Trunyan, an ancient Bali Aga village known for one of Bali’s most unusual burial traditions.
Here, some of those who die naturally are neither cremated nor buried. Instead, their bodies are placed beneath bamboo structures in an isolated cemetery by the lake, where they are left to decompose naturally beneath the legendary Taru Menyan tree.
In this journey, I travelled to Trunyan, spoke with a local guide, explored the village, and crossed Lake Batur to visit the cemetery myself.
This film is not about the spectacle of death, but about a community where death has never been hidden from everyday life.
