Everyone Doubted the Woman Who Saved 17 Unwanted Cattle.. Until They Saw What Each Cow Could Produce

Janice Holloway went to a Mississippi sale barn intending to replace two commercial cows. Instead, she found seventeen unwanted Pineywoods cattle waiting in the final pen. The small, horned and mixed-color cattle were the last remaining group from a family line that had been kept together for generations. Buyers saw old cows, light calves and a herd that could not fill a standard truckload. Janice saw cattle that might fit the hot, humid and increasingly expensive conditions on her family ranch. Her first trial nearly destroyed the idea. Janice placed the Pineywoods on poor pasture, reduced feed too quickly and allowed an aging bull to breed before receiving a soundness examination. Cows lost body condition, three remained open and the bull proved both unreliable and closely related to much of the herd. Instead of blaming the breed or hiding the failure, Janice rebuilt the program around forage tests, body-condition records, improved water access, unrelated genetics and verified reproductive performance. The Pineywoods calves still weighed less than the Angus-cross calves and sold poorly through the commodity auction. But the cows required less purchased feed, bred more consistently under difficult Gulf Coast conditions and produced competitive calf weight relative to the cost of maintaining them. The final question was not whether the rare cattle looked impressive. It was whether experienced ranchers trusted the records enough to use the genetics on their own land.
