A Swiss Tradition Comes Alive 🇨🇭 | Cattle Show in Heiden, Appenzell

Experience a living Swiss tradition at the Viehschau Heiden/Grub in Heiden, Appenzell Ausserrhoden — a gathering that brings farming heritage and village life together. Each autumn, cattle shows take place across the Appenzellerland after the summer grazing season in the Alps. Farmers present their carefully prepared animals, and experienced judges assess and rank them according to breed characteristics. Some farmers arrive in traditional Appenzeller dress, following the same ceremonial order used during the return from the alpine pastures. A wooden entrance arch decorated with fir branches, flowers and ribbons welcomes them to the show, while prize-winning cattle receive wreaths of paper flowers. Beyond the judging, the Viehschau is a meeting place for farming families, neighbours and visitors. It offers a glimpse into the pride, care and community spirit that keep this tradition alive.
