In the summer of 2021, devastating floods struck Belgium and neighbouring countries, revealing how decades of wetland drainage and landscape alteration had reduced the land’s natural ability to retain water.
This documentary takes us to the Réserve naturelle Gérard & Francis Paquay (Quatre-Vents) in Vielsalm, Belgium, where the REWET project is restoring the hydrological functions of degraded wetlands in the upper catchment of the Amblève River. Through drainage blocking, water retention measures and ecological restoration, the site is being transformed into a more resilient landscape capable of slowing water flows, reducing flood risks, storing carbon and supporting biodiversity.
Featuring insights from Natagora and Bureau Stroming, this video explores how wetland restoration can help communities adapt to climate change while bringing nature back to life.
