October 13, 2026. We travel deep into South Lebanon, visiting Tebnine (Tibnin), Braachit, and neighboring villages near the conflict zone, where families continue living despite bombardments, destruction, and uncertainty.
Accompanied by L’Œuvre d’Orient and Father Marios, a Greek Catholic priest serving the Diocese of Tyre, we discover the extraordinary resilience of Christian communities determined to remain in their ancestral villages.
Our first important stop is Saint George School in Tebnine, run by the Basilian Chouerite Sisters.
This school welcomes Christian and non-Christian students and has suffered tremendously throughout the conflict. Teachers, students, and families have been displaced three times in three years.
Despite damaged windows, cracks in the building, and nearby bombardments, the school continues its educational mission.
The school’s director shares a moving message about hope, responsibility, and the importance of keeping the school open for the community.
We then continue our journey with Father Marios to visit Greek Catholic parishes and churches affected by the war.
In Braachit, we discover damage to the church roof and the priest’s residence.
We also visit another small village where a historic church dating back to 1911, classified as part of Lebanon’s historical heritage, was partially destroyed during the 2024 conflict.
The church had previously suffered damage during earlier conflicts in 1978 and 1992.
Today, restoration work remains suspended because of the uncertain security situation. Stones have been carefully collected, and preliminary stabilization work has been completed, but much remains to be done to save this important religious monument.
Throughout the documentary, we hear powerful testimonies from priests and residents who describe displacement, returning home, rebuilding their churches, and refusing to abandon their land.
One particularly moving story comes from a priest who returned to his church after 47 days of displacement and discovered something that became a profound symbol of faith and hope for his parish.
These communities continue living in their villages, even as explosions and military activity remain part of their daily reality.
L’Œuvre d’Orient works alongside these communities, supporting schools, parishes, humanitarian projects, and the preservation of Christian heritage across Lebanon and the Middle East.
During this visit, we meet members of the organization’s Lebanon team, who explain their work, their partnerships, and the importance of maintaining a presence in these vulnerable villages.
And, of course, no journey through Lebanon would be complete without my passion for discovering old church bells!
We explore church bell towers, examine historic bells, search for their inscriptions and casting dates, and attempt to reach a particularly difficult bell in one of the damaged churches.
Some bells are accessible. Others will have to wait for our next visit!
Driving through South Lebanon, we also witness the changing landscape of destruction and reconstruction. In some areas, rubble has been cleared and temporary prefabricated homes have appeared, but uncertainty remains.
This documentary is not simply about war and destruction.
It is about education, faith, heritage, courage, solidarity, and the extraordinary determination of Lebanese communities to remain connected to their land.
🇱🇧 South Lebanon is not just a place on the news. It is home to families, schools, churches, traditions, and generations of history that deserve to be protected.
