Tonight, you will lock your doors, turn off the lights, and fall completely unconscious for eight hours without a second thought. For modern humans, sleep is safe.
100,000 years ago, sleep was an evolutionary death trap.
As fragile, slow, ground-dwelling primates with terrible night vision, early humans spent one-third of their lives completely defenseless in an environment dominated by apex nocturnal predators. Saber-toothed cats, prehistoric hyenas, and leopards ruled the darkness. If an entire tribe went to sleep at the same time, they wouldn't survive the week.
So how did our ancestors get the rest their brains needed without becoming an easy midnight meal?
In this video, we explore the ancient science of prehistoric sleep: from the discovery of protective fire perimeters and thorny boma barricades, to the "Sentinel Hypothesis" that explains why humans evolved staggered sleep schedules, and the primitive neurological trick that still keeps your brain half-awake in unfamiliar rooms today.
Subscribe to Before the Pavement for deep dives into human survival, archaeology, evolutionary biology, and prehistoric ingenuity.
