UTBJ Episode 013 📍Location Hita City, Oita prefecture, Japan Tai-o Gold Mine is a former gold mine located deep in the mountains of Nakatsue, Hita City, Oita Prefecture. The mine was discovered in the late 19th century and developed into one of the major gold-producing mines in Japan. At its peak, a mining community grew around the site, with workers and their families living in this remote mountainous area. Mining continued for decades before the mine eventually closed in 1972. Today, part of the former mine has been preserved as an underground museum. Visitors can walk through the tunnels and see the remains and reconstructions of the mining operations that once took place beneath these mountains.
