Day 296 — BE Quick to Obey | Pastor Kerry Francis | October 27, 2026 A Year in Freedom Daily Devotional | NFCM House of Freedom We’ve been learning to be quick — quick to listen, receiving before responding; quick to repent, turning the moment conviction comes; quick to forgive, releasing what we were never meant to carry. Today the sequence lands on the most practical question of all: when God speaks, how fast do you actually move? In today’s devotional, Pastor Kerry Francis opens James 1:22 — “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” That phrase merely listen carries a warning most of us miss. You can listen correctly, understand accurately, agree completely, and still deceive yourself into believing you’ve done something when you’ve only received something. Slow obedience rarely looks like rebellion. God prompts you to reach out to someone and you plan to do it tomorrow. He shows you something to stop and you decide you’ll address it soon. He gives clear direction and you wait for more favorable circumstances. None of that is refusal — it’s delay. And delay has a way of becoming permanent without you ever consciously choosing to disobey. You never said no; you just never said yes quickly enough. But this goes deeper than behavior. Jesus connects obedience directly to love: “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching.” He doesn’t say obedience earns love — He says love produces obedience. Which means slow obedience isn’t only an action problem; it’s a love-temperature problem. When your love for God is warm, responding feels natural. When it cools, every instruction feels like a burden to negotiate. The speed of your obedience is a fairly accurate thermometer for the temperature of your love. And notice the promise attached: the Father will love them, and We will come to them and make Our home with them. The one who receives that presence isn’t the one who knows the most or feels the most — it’s the one who does what Jesus says. Not earning favor, simply creating the conditions that let Someone move in. So what has God said that you haven’t acted on? Usually it isn’t something uncertain — it’s something clear that you haven’t moved toward. Quick obedience doesn’t require perfect conditions or complete understanding. It requires trust that the One who spoke knows more than you do about what happens when you move.
