Quindicesimo seminario, seconda serie. I will draw on my theoretical and clinical experience gained in community and hospital psychiatric services. In particular, I will focus on the social and cultural factors that interact with the suffering as it is presented—which is often just the tip of the iceberg. When faced with psychological distress, it is necessary to rethink treatment through a multidisciplinary, transcultural approach and a systems-oriented perspective. Current practice often decontextualizes symptoms, failing to take into account variables that are not specifically of clinical relevance, such as the social and cultural aspects with which the practice interacts, a multidisciplinary and transcultural approach to symptomatology—one that is attentive to terms that express not merely thoughts but worldviews—and that must be “updated” through a new lexicon and grammar to (re)define conceptual terms such as listening, culture, identity, metaphorical journey, space, and time. Let’s try mixing flour, water, and yeast and then rolling out the “dough,” which is the substance from which the thinking and acting of the practitioner of the third millennium will be composed.
