How do you know when a movie has the potential to become something special?
In this episode of The Honest Filmmaker, I'm joined by filmmaker, producer and horror industry veteran Steve Barton, better known to many fans as Uncle Creepy.
Steve has spent around 30 years in the film industry, from working with Fangoria and founding Dread Central to producing and promoting independent horror films. Along the way, he worked with legends including George A. Romero and Sid Haig.
But one of the biggest stories of his career is TERRIFIER.
Steve tells me how he discovered Damien Leone's original Terrifier, why he fought to get the film released despite the people around him not believing in it, and how he helped build the audience for Terrifier 2 with virtually no traditional marketing budget.
We also talk about:
• What George Romero and Sid Haig taught Steve about filmmaking and dealing with people
• Why working as a critic gave him an instinct for what audiences respond to
• The problems with modern film criticism and paid reviews
• Why filmmakers need to be prepared to wear every hat
• The importance of contracts — even when you're working with friends
• Why collaboration is essential on an independent film
• Dealing with bad reviews and criticism
• The business realities behind independent filmmaking
• Why there are no shortcuts to building a career
• And the film that started Steve's lifelong love affair with horror: George Romero's NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
Steve's story is a fascinating look at what really happens behind the scenes when an independent horror film suddenly finds an audience.
If you're a filmmaker trying to build a career outside the traditional system, there's a lot to take away from this conversation.
